TCD Schizophrenia Neuroimaging Genetics

A structural and functional MRI investigation of genetics, cognition and emotion in schizophrenia (Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Dublin)

3T brain MRI (T1-weighted, diffusion, resting-state fMRI) of patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls from a Science Foundation Ireland neuroimaging genetics study at Trinity College Dublin. A PSYSCAN legacy dataset; images are not shared.

Overview

This entry covers the brain MRI sample of a neuroimaging genetics study of schizophrenia run at the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience in Dublin and funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The study's title was "A structural and functional MRI investigation of genetics, cognition and emotion in schizophrenia". The images later became one of the legacy datasets of the EU PSYSCAN project and were used in multi-cohort work on cortical morphometric similarity and on machine-learning classification of schizophrenia.

Composition

Patients came through local clinical services in Dublin, and controls with no psychiatric history were recruited by local advertisement in the same area. Pregnancy, neurological disease, intellectual disability and recent substance misuse were exclusion criteria. Morgan et al. (2019) started from 184 people with both T1-weighted and diffusion scans. After removing 9 for head motion and 60 for poor diffusion data, 115 remained: 33 patients (30 schizophrenia, 3 schizoaffective disorder) and 82 controls. Patients were older on average (42.2 vs 33.5 years) and more often male (73% vs 43%). Lei et al. (2020) used 32 patients and 83 controls with structural and resting-state functional scans. How the two subsets overlap is not reported.

Acquisition

All scans were made on one 3T Philips Intera Achieva system. The T1-weighted scan used TR/TE 8.4/3.8 ms and 0.9 mm isotropic voxels. Resting-state fMRI had 180 volumes at TR 2 s with 3.5 mm isotropic voxels. Diffusion-weighted imaging was also acquired, but its protocol is not described in the open sources. Symptoms were rated with SAPS and SANS for 24 of the 33 analysed patients.

Annotations

No image annotations. Labels are diagnosis, age, sex and symptom scores.

Known limitations

  • Images are not shared. Lei et al. (2020) state the data are unavailable for confidentiality reasons, and no terms are published.
  • Only derived regional cortical measures (thickness, volume, area, curvature, FA, MD) with age, sex and group for the 115 analysed participants are public, on Figshare under CC BY 4.0.
  • The full study enrolment is not reported; the counts here cover the subsets used in two papers.
  • Many controls were lost to diffusion quality control, so the analysed sample is unbalanced in age and sex.

Access
Not shared

The data are not available outside the institution or study that holds them

The data availability statement of Lei et al. (2020), where the sample is Dataset 4, says the data are unavailable due to research data confidentiality. Morgan et al. (2019) used the sample as a PSYSCAN legacy dataset and published only derived regional cortical measures with age, sex and group on Figshare under CC BY 4.0.

Neither Morgan et al. (2019) nor Lei et al. (2020) states a license or data use terms for the images. The CC BY 4.0 Figshare deposit covers derived regional measures only.
