Psychosis MRI Shared Data Resource

Structural T1-weighted brain MRI with linked clinical, demographic and cognitive data from people with schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, clinical high risk for psychosis, bipolar disorder and healthy controls, pooled from legacy studies at sites on four continents for neuroanatomical research on psychosis.

Overview

Psy-ShareD pools structural brain MRI that research groups collected in earlier psychosis studies into one resource that any academic researcher can apply to use. It is run by a partnership led from King's College London and funded by the UK Medical Research Council. Each T1-weighted scan is linked to demographic, diagnostic and clinical measures and, for many studies, to IQ, cognition and medication data. Scans are defaced at the contributing site and transferred to King's College London, where the team runs FreeSurfer and harmonises both image-level and feature-level data across scanners.

Composition

The data catalogue lists 56 contributed studies with 6,974 scans in total, follow-up scans included. Each study has its own record (PSYD_xxyy, where xx is the site and yy the study) on the King's College London Figshare repository, with group sizes, age range, clinical scales and acquisition details. Groups include schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, clinical high risk for psychosis, schizotypy, bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, childhood trauma and healthy controls. A minority of studies have longitudinal follow-up.

Contributing sites include King's College London, Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh and the CUBIC centre in London (UK), NIMHANS Bangalore (India), Lübeck, LMU Munich and Charité Berlin (Germany), Kyoto and Toyama (Japan), Naples (Italy), Mexico, Zurich, Singapore, Johns Hopkins, Georgia State and UCLA (USA), FIDMAG, Valladolid and Seville (Spain), Sichuan (China) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).

Acquisition

All scans are T1-weighted structural images from sequences such as SPGR, MPRAGE and ADNI-GO, acquired on GE, Siemens and Philips scanners at 1.5 T or 3 T. Sequence parameters differ by study and are listed in each Figshare record.

Known limitations

The catalogue counts scans, not people, and its per-study numbers do not always match the Figshare records. Some studies offer only FreeSurfer outputs, not images. Healthy controls in some studies had no full psychiatric screening. The UCLA study appears in two Figshare records with the same code (PSYD_2801). Access needs an approved request, a Data Use Agreement with King's College London, and since June 2026 a processing fee; the Johns Hopkins study adds its own terms.

Psy-ShareD Data Sharing Memorandum of Understanding and Terms and Conditions of Use

Access goes to a specific project after a Data Access Request is approved by the Psy-ShareD Data Management Committee and the contributing sites, followed by a Data Use Agreement with King's College London and local ethics approval. Data may not go to third parties not named in the request, manuscripts go to the partnership before submission, and site PIs and the Psy-ShareD Partnership join the author line. Since 1 June 2026 approved requests pay a data processing charge. The Johns Hopkins dataset carries extra terms.

Every site record on KCL Figshare points to the same Psy-ShareD Data Access Request. Approved requests sign a Data Use Agreement with King's College London. Since 1 June 2026 a data processing charge applies (GBP 30.31 per GB, at least GBP 400). The Johns Hopkins dataset (PSYD_1601) carries extra terms on commercial use, publication review and US export and sanctions law.
