C-MIND (NDA 2329)
Cincinnati MR Imaging of NeuroDevelopment (C-MIND)
Brain MRI and behavioral tests of typically developing children from birth to 18 years, collected to build standardized methods and reference data for normal brain development, with structural, diffusion, functional and perfusion MRI including concurrent ASL/BOLD during language tasks.
Overview
C-MIND (Cincinnati MR Imaging of NeuroDevelopment) is a pediatric MRI study started in 2009 by the Pediatric Functional Neuroimaging Research Network, which the Pediatric Neuroimaging Research Consortium at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center led under an NICHD contract. Its goals were to standardize how children from birth through adolescence are recruited, scanned and processed, and to describe normal brain development across that age range, with a focus on language and attention. The study's website now states that NIH funding has ended and that all data moved to NIMH Data Archive (NDA) collection 2329.
Composition
NDA lists 211 shared subjects, all of whom have records in the Image data structure. The study describes the cohort as more than 200 typically developing children aged 0 to 18 years in a cross-sectional design, plus longitudinal data from 40 infants and toddlers (0 to 3 years) and 30 children aged 7 to 9, scanned in consecutive years. NDA does not break the shared subjects down by age, sex or visit. Behavioral structures cover intelligence scales (WPPSI-IV, WISC, WAIS-IV, Bayley-III for infants), vocabulary, reading, memory, attention, motor and behavior checklists, each shared for 7 to 210 subjects.
Acquisition
According to the NDA and NITRC descriptions, the imaging includes 3D T1- and T2-weighted anatomy, DTI and HARDI diffusion, resting-state fMRI, baseline ASL perfusion and a combined ASL/BOLD acquisition during two language tasks (story listening and sentence-picture matching). A study paper reports a Philips 3T Achieva scanner with a 32-channel head coil at Cincinnati Children's. Infants were scanned during natural sleep without sedation; older children were awake and could watch a movie. The funder's interview mentions children from the Cincinnati and Los Angeles areas.
Known limitations
- Access requires an approved NDA Data Access Request and Data Use Certification.
- The NDA page gives no counts per sequence, age group, sex or session, so only the total is listed.
- The scanner model comes from one study paper on a subset of 113 children and may not describe every session or site.
- The last submission to the NDA collection was in March 2016, and its expected-data list is marked not completed.

NIMH Data Archive Data Use Terms and Conditions (Data Use Certification)
Terms every NIMH Data Archive data access request accepts. Data are for research, scholarship or teaching; they may only be shared with collaborators who hold their own access; re-identification is forbidden; each publication needs an NDA Study linked to the data and an acknowledgement; downloaded data must be deleted when the research ends or after the one-year access period.
The C-MIND website states that all data were transferred to NIMH Data Archive collection 2329, which is accessed under the NDA Data Use Certification.
