Radiation Temporal Lobe Injury Diffusion MRI (SYSMH)

Comparative Study of Multi-Model Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Diagnosis of Radiation-Induced Temporal Lobe Injury

Diffusion MRI of patients with unilateral temporal lobe necrosis after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, used to compare ADC, DTI, DKI, MAP-MRI and NODDI parameters between the injured and the healthy side. Only a table of per-lobe parameter values is public; the scans are not shared.

Overview

This Science Data Bank record comes from a retrospective study at the Department of Radiology of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, in Guangzhou, China. The study asked which diffusion MRI model best separates a temporal lobe damaged by radiotherapy from the healthy temporal lobe on the other side. It compared the apparent diffusion coefficient with parameters from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), mean apparent propagator MRI (MAP-MRI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), using ROC analysis. The record was published on 30 January 2026 as version 1 under CC0.

Composition

The description reports 80 patients who developed temporal lobe necrosis on one side after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Each patient serves as their own control, with the unaffected temporal lobe as the reference. Age, sex, time since radiotherapy and scanner are not given. The only file is a small results table with one row per temporal lobe and columns for DKI radial kurtosis, DTI radial diffusivity, MAP-MRI non-Gaussianity anisotropy, NODDI intracellular volume fraction and ADC, plus label columns.

Acquisition

All patients had conventional MRI and a diffusion MRI examination. All five models were fitted to the same diffusion data. Field strength, vendor, b-values, number of directions and the conventional sequences are not described.

Known limitations

  • No images are public, only one table of derived values, so the cohort cannot be reanalysed from the scans.
  • No study paper is linked from the record and none was found, so the design is known only from the record's description and the table's column names.
  • Demographics and acquisition parameters are missing.
  • Single centre, retrospective, and limited to patients with unilateral necrosis.

The data are not available outside the institution or study that holds them

The Science Data Bank record holds one results table (6958 bytes) with diffusion parameter values (DKI radial kurtosis, DTI radial diffusivity, MAP-MRI non-Gaussianity anisotropy, NODDI intracellular volume fraction and ADC) for the affected and the contralateral temporal lobe of each patient. No images are deposited and no route to them is given.
