STRIvE eating disorders MRI

STRIvE-ED stress and eating disorders inpatient MRI study (University of Cambridge)

3T brain MRI (T1-weighted, task fMRI, 1H-MRS) of 85 women from Cambridge, UK: 22 with anorexia nervosa (binge/purge subtype), 33 with bulimia nervosa and 30 controls, scanned on two days under acute stress and a control task. Images are not shared.

Overview

STRIvE-ED is a University of Cambridge study of how acute psychological stress affects self-control in women with binge-eating disorders. Women with anorexia nervosa of the binge-eating/purging subtype, women with bulimia nervosa and healthy women stayed two days in an inpatient research facility, where they had repeated brain MRI, blood sampling for stress and gut hormones, and a free-choice meal after each scan. The images have not been released. The study name appears in the authors' public stimulus code repository.

Composition

After outpatient screening of 100 volunteers, 85 women took part: 22 with anorexia nervosa (binge/purge subtype), 33 with bulimia nervosa and 30 controls. Eligible women were 18 to 40 years old, right-handed and had a BMI up to 29.9; the mean age was 24.0 years. Diagnoses followed DSM-5, set by structured clinical interview. Groups were matched on age and IQ, and the bulimia and control groups also on BMI. Most patients had comorbid psychiatric diagnoses and many took psychotropic medication. Recruitment ran through advertisements, an eating disorders charity and an adult NHS eating disorder service in Cambridgeshire.

Acquisition

All scans were made on one 3T Siemens SkyraFit at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, Addenbrooke's Hospital, with a 32-channel head coil. Each day included a 1 mm isotropic T1-weighted scan and two task fMRI runs of a stop-signal anticipation task (3 mm voxels, TR 1.6 s, 631 volumes), one before and one after either a stress induction or a control arithmetic task, in counterbalanced order. On the control day, single-voxel proton spectroscopy was acquired in the right inferior lateral prefrontal and medial occipital cortex.

Annotations

No image annotations. Labels are diagnosis, clinical scales, task performance, hormone levels and food intake.

Known limitations

  • Not shared. Neither paper has a data availability statement, and no access process or terms are published.
  • Run counts vary: fMRI runs were lost to head motion and technical errors, and one participant was excluded for an incidental white matter finding.
  • Women only, from a single site and scanner.
