Stanford Cardiac Performance MRI

Human MRI Data to Quantify Cardiac Performance

Multiparametric cardiac MRI of healthy adults and a few patients with aortic valve stenosis, acquired as a baseline of myocardial structure, motion and tissue properties, with cine, diffusion tensor, DENSE strain, grid tagging and T1 mapping images.

Overview

This record holds the acquired cardiac MRI of a prospective Stanford cohort of healthy adults and a small group of patients with aortic valve stenosis, deposited in the Stanford Digital Repository by the Cardiac Magnetic Research Group. The study set out to describe healthy myocardial structure and mechanics in detail, so that work on cardiac biomechanics, on the step from normal ageing to valve disease and on computational heart models has a common reference. Funding came from the US National Science Foundation.

Composition

The abstract describes 55 participants: 51 healthy volunteers with a mean age of 39 years (standard deviation 14) and 4 patients with aortic stenosis. Version 9 of the record has 57 participant archives, 52 named as healthy volunteers and 5 as aortic stenosis patients. The record's Read_Me explains that one volunteer has only cine images and is left out of the cohort statistics, and that the first three volunteer numbers were used to set up the protocol and are not shared. Each archive contains DICOM images sorted by sequence and by short axis or long axis view, plus a Read_Me with the participant's sex, age, height, weight and slice counts. By these files the cohort has 33 men and 24 women aged 19 to 84 years.

Acquisition

All participants were scanned between 2023 and 2025 on one 3 T Siemens MAGNETOM Vida Fit with the same coils and protocol. The protocol covers localizers, cine balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) in short and long axis, cardiac diffusion tensor imaging with two phase encoding polarities, cine displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE) with three encoding directions, grid tagging and native T1 mapping. Long axis slices start at the three chamber view and rotate clockwise.

Known limitations

Not every participant has every sequence: 47 of 57 have all five image types, and the Read_Me lists which archives lack tagging, T1 mapping, DENSE or diffusion images. The participant counts in the abstract and in the file listing differ. No segmentations or derived maps are included. Processed diffusion tensor data and left ventricle segmentations of 48 volunteers are in a separate record (doi:10.25740/yh756nh8583) under a different license. The repository's use statement asks users not to use the content to identify individuals.
