MCIC

MIND Clinical Imaging Consortium (MCIC) collection

Four-site US study of 162 people with schizophrenia and 169 matched controls with raw DICOM T1w, T2w, diffusion and task fMRI plus clinical and cognitive data. Data from three of the sites are shared through COINS under a data use agreement.

Overview

The MIND Clinical Imaging Consortium (MCIC) ran a cross-sectional study at four US sites between 2004 and 2006 to find neuroimaging markers of schizophrenia. The consortium, coordinated by the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, shares raw DICOM images together with clinical, demographic and neuropsychological data through the COINS Data Exchange. The collection is intended for schizophrenia research, for testing registration and segmentation software, and for teaching.

Composition

The study recruited 188 patients and 190 healthy controls. Data are available for 162 patients and 169 controls (331 subjects), aged 18 to 60 at inclusion. Patients met DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or schizophreniform disorder, and recruitment favoured people early in their illness. Controls were matched within site for age, sex and parental education. The paper reports structural MRI for 327 subjects and diffusion MRI for 289. Of the four sites, only three are publicly released; the paper does not say which site is withheld, so the counts in this entry describe the full four-site cohort and overstate the shared subset.

Acquisition

Sites used 1.5T and 3T scanners: a 1.5T Siemens Sonata, a 3T Siemens Trio, a 1.5T Siemens paired with a 3T Trio for fMRI, and a 1.5T GE Signa paired with a 3T Trio. Each subject had coronal T1-weighted scans (two or three volumes) and two coronal T2-weighted TSE volumes, a diffusion scan with 6 to 60 directions depending on site, and EPI fMRI for a Sternberg working memory task, a sensorimotor task, an auditory oddball task and a breath hold task. Task timing and E-Prime response files are included. DICOM headers are scrubbed and subjects carry anonymous IDs.

Known limitations

  • Single time point, no follow-up.
  • Diffusion protocols differ between sites, and structural scans mix field strengths and vendors.
  • Reaction times from one site are unusable because of a button box setup error.
  • Genetic data collected in the study are not part of the release.
  • The data use agreement is sent after a request and its text is not published.

MCIC Data Use Agreement

Users request the data through the COINS Data Exchange and must accept the MCIC Data Use Agreement before they can download. The data providers describe the data as free to use without restrictions and ask, without requiring it, that users cite the paper and the sharing site. The agreement text itself is not published, so most rules are unspecified.
