LINCHPIN CT and pathology set

Lothian IntraCerebral Haemorrhage, Pathology, Imaging and Neurological Outcome (LINCHPIN) study, CT and neuropathology data

Admission non-contrast head CT of 110 adults with first-ever intracerebral haemorrhage in Lothian, Scotland, who died and had a research autopsy, with masked CT ratings, APOE genotype and CAA grading. The ratings are open; the CT images are not shared.

Overview

LINCHPIN is a prospective, population-based inception cohort of adults with spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage in the Lothian region of Scotland, run by the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. This entry covers the part of the cohort with a research autopsy, which was used to derive the Edinburgh CT and genetic criteria for lobar haemorrhage caused by cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). The table of CT ratings, APOE genotype and neuropathology ratings is an open download; the CT images themselves are not shared.

Composition

110 adults with a first-ever intracerebral haemorrhage confirmed on CT, who died and underwent research autopsy between June 2010 and February 2016. Median age 83 years, 49 men. The haemorrhage was lobar in 62, deep in 41 and infratentorial in 7. Among the lobar cases, 36 had moderate or severe CAA and 26 absent or mild CAA. The wider LINCHPIN incidence study counted 128 adults with first-ever primary haemorrhage in 2010 to 2011 in a population of 695,335 adults.

Acquisition

Each participant had a non-contrast head CT that diagnosed the haemorrhage, with a median of 5 hours from onset to CT. Median time from CT to autopsy was 11 days. APOE genotype came from blood (28) or post-mortem cerebellar tissue (82).

Annotations

Two neuroradiologists rated the reformatted CT on a standard form, masked to clinical, genetic and pathological data: haemorrhage location, subarachnoid, subdural and intraventricular extension, finger-like projections and other features. A neuropathologist graded parenchymal and meningeal CAA and other small vessel disease in the left hemisphere. Labels are case-level ratings; there are no voxel masks.

Known limitations

  • The CT images are not available; only the ratings table and the analysis code are public.
  • Only people who died and consented to autopsy are included, so the set is older and more severely affected than the full cohort.
  • No MRI is part of this set; only seven lobar cases had an MRI within six months.
