KNE96 Korean Normal Elderly template cohort
Korean Normal Elderly (KNE) brain MRI template study, KLOSCAD subsample
3 T T1-weighted brain MRI of 144 cognitively normal Korean adults aged 60 or older from KLOSCAD. Scans of 96 built the KNE96, KNE48M and KNE48F templates, 48 validated them. Only the templates were released; scans are not shared.
Overview
The Korean Normal Elderly (KNE) template study scanned 144 cognitively normal Korean adults drawn from the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD), a population-based cohort started in 2009. The goal was an elderly, ethnically matched brain template for spatial normalization, as an alternative to young Western templates such as ICBM152. The authors released three derived group templates: KNE96 (all 96 construction subjects), KNE48M (the 48 men) and KNE48F (the 48 women). The individual scans were not released, and the paper gives no route to request them. The template download page named in the paper now returns 404.
Composition
144 right-handed participants aged 60 years or older, all rated CDR 0. People with a DSM-IV Axis I disorder or a serious medical or neurological disorder that could affect cognition were excluded. A construction group of 96 (48 men, mean age 69.5; 48 women, mean age 70.1) built the templates, and a separate validation group of 48 (24 men, 24 women) tested them. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.
Acquisition
Scans were 3D T1-weighted spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) images acquired on a 3 T GE SIGNA system: sagittal 1 mm slices, 1 mm isotropic voxels, TR 25 ms, TE 3.68 ms, flip angle 30 degrees, 24 cm field of view. Images were stored as DICOM and converted to ANALYZE for processing.
Annotations
No manual labels. The templates were built with the DARTEL toolbox in SPM8. For validation, the 48 held-out scans were registered to KNE96 and to ICBM152, and the deformations (displacement magnitude and log Jacobian determinant) were compared by brain region. Registration to KNE96 needed smaller deformations in most regions.
Known limitations
- Subject scans are not shared and no data use terms were published; only the templates were offered.
- The template download page no longer resolves, so the templates are also unavailable from the original source.
- One contrast (T1w) on one scanner model; age is reported only as mean and standard deviation per group.
