DETERMINE (Cardiac Atlas Project)
Defibrillators to Reduce Risk by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Evaluation, Cardiac Atlas Project collection
Cardiac MRI of 450 patients with coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction from the multicentre DETERMINE trial, hosted by the Cardiac Atlas Project: cine SSFP and late gadolinium enhancement images with core-lab contours and 3D left ventricular models, shared under a per-project agreement.
Overview
The Cardiac Atlas Project (CAP) hosts cardiac MRI from DETERMINE, a prospective multicentre randomised trial in patients with coronary artery disease and mild to moderate left ventricular dysfunction. The trial tested whether an implantable cardioverter defibrillator added to medical therapy improves survival in patients whose infarct covers a large share of the left ventricular mass. CAP collects such exams to build statistical atlases of heart shape and motion, and the DETERMINE collection has been used for atlas studies of remodelling after myocardial infarction.
Composition
The CAP page lists 450 DETERMINE cases, each with MR images, and some with 3D left ventricular models fitted semi-automatically with the Cardiac Image Modeller software from the University of Auckland. The 2011 CAP paper reported 470 contributed datasets from patients with myocardial infarction at that time. CAP also holds limited clinical variables for the contributed cases, such as age, sex, height, weight, blood pressure, and classifications for hypertension, diabetes, smoking and NYHA class.
Acquisition
Exams were acquired at the trial field centres on 1.5 T or 3 T scanners from Siemens, GE and Philips. A typical exam has retrospectively gated SSFP cine images in breath-holds of 8 to 15 seconds, with short-axis slices covering the whole heart and long-axis slices in four-chamber, two-chamber and outflow tract views. Late gadolinium enhancement images, an inversion recovery segmented gradient echo sequence 10 to 20 minutes after contrast injection, are taken at the same positions as the cine slices. Images are stored as DICOM objects.
Annotations
The DETERMINE MRI core laboratory at Northwestern University analysed the images with QMASS and contributed the ventricular contours to CAP. The left ventricular models were derived from the images with semi-automatic fitting.
Known limitations
- Download is suspended while the data sharing agreement with the contributor is renewed.
- Only participants who gave separate consent to share with CAP are included.
- Access needs an approved research proposal and a signed agreement per project, and commercial use needs the permission of the trial holder and sponsor.
- The CAP page gives the inclusion threshold as an infarct of at least 15% of left ventricular mass, the 2011 paper as at least 10%.
- No breakdown by sex, age, site or scanner is published for the hosted cases.

Cardiac Atlas Project DETERMINE Data Distribution Agreement
DETERMINE data in the Cardiac Atlas Project go only to researchers whose project is approved by CAP and the DETERMINE steering committee and who sign a recipient agreement with the same terms. Use is limited to the approved project, publications are reviewed by the trial committee, commercial use needs permission, and data are deleted at the end of the project.
