CHBMP

Cuban Human Brain Mapping Project, second wave

Population-based multimodal data from 282 functionally healthy Cuban adults aged 18 to 68: 1.5 T T1w and diffusion MRI for 203 of them, high-density resting-state EEG, cognitive tests and demographics, shared in BIDS on Synapse.

Overview

The Cuban Human Brain Mapping Project (CHBMP) is a long-running brain health program of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, coordinated by the Cuban Neuroscience Center. This entry covers its second wave, collected from 2004 to 2008 to build normative references for quantitative EEG and its sources using each person's own MRI. The release was curated with the McGill Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and contributes multimodal brain data from a Latin American country.

Composition

282 adults aged 18 to 68 (mean 31.9 years) who passed a multi-stage health screening: 87 women and 195 men. Of these, 203 have usable MRI and 201 have diffusion images. The release also holds resting-state EEG with 64 or 120 channels for 250 people, WAIS-III scores, MMSE, a go/no-go reaction time task for a subset of 56, and demographic data such as handedness, education and weight. 171 participants have both EEG and MRI.

Acquisition

Participants were drawn by stratified random sampling from the population of La Lisa, a Havana municipality chosen because its demographics resembled the national ones. From 2,019 candidates, family doctors, neurologists, psychiatrists and radiologists excluded anyone with a disease, addiction or brain finding. MRI was done at CIMEQ in Havana on one 1.5 T Siemens MAGNETOM Symphony: a 1 mm isotropic 3D MPRAGE T1w, a gradient-echo field map and 12-direction diffusion imaging in one of two variants (148 and 53 people). Images were anonymized, defaced with FreeSurfer mri_deface and organized in BIDS together with the EEG.

Annotations

There are no image labels. Each participant has cognitive scores and demographics that can serve as regression targets, and the whole cohort serves as a healthy reference.

Known limitations

  • Men outnumber women by more than two to one because male sampling continued longer at the request of the Ministry of Health.
  • Only 203 of the 282 participants have usable MRI, and not every person has every measurement.
  • Single 1.5 T scanner, with data acquired from 2004 to 2008.
  • Access needs a Synapse account and approval of a request stating the intended use. No license or data use terms are published.
